Concertino for Saxophone by Gaetano Donizetti arranged for alto saxophone solo with piano or wind ensemble. This work is a transcription of Donizetti;s Concertino for English Horn, an 1816 composition. Donizetti was a prolific opera composer, but he also wrote a few instrumental works. The Concertino is standard repertoire for the English Horn. It is a frequent orchestral audition and competition piece. The form is very simple – a slow introduction, followed by a theme and variations with a sprightly Allegro to close the piece. Even though it is an early work, most likely for a school assignment, we hear Donizetti’s famous melodic gifts at work.
As the ranges of the English horn and the alto saxophone are similar, the piece lends itself well to performance on saxophone. An optional cadenza is included. It may be varied or omitted at the player’s discretion. The range for the solo saxophone part is shown below.
This arrangement is for piano and alto saxophone solo. A transcription for wind ensemble with alto saxophone solo is available as well.
