String Quartet No. 2 in F major by Glinka, string quartet transcription for saxophone quartet SATB. This quartet was written by Mikhail Glinka in 1830 and finally published in Moscow in 1878, well after his death. The quartet is tuneful with fresh sounding themes presented in a straightforward way. Although it is in a typical four movement quartet form, the harmonies are sometimes surprisingly dissonant.

This string quartet transcription of Glinka’s Quartet No. 2 in F major is for SATB saxophone quartet and is in the original keys. It is based on the 1904 P. Jurgenson edition edited by Liapunov and Balakirev.

About the Composer

Mikhail Ivanovich Glinka is often regarded as the father of Russian classical music. Glinka’s compositions were an important influence on future Russian composers such as Tchaikovsky, Rimsky-Korsakov, and Stravinsky. A well-educated child of a wealthy family, Glinka took some music lessons, but did not study music seriously as a youth. His first job was in government but he resigned when he realized how strongly he was drawn to music. After many years of study in Europe, Glinka returned to Russia where he began to write western-style classical music strongly influenced by Russian life and folk music. He is best known for his operas but composed in a wide variety of genres.
