Quartet in F Major, Op. 17, No. 2 by Haydn, string quartet transcription for saxophone quartet SATB.  The Opus 17 Quartets, composed in 1771, are somewhat transitional works in that Haydn is still toying with the structure and order of his movements along the way to a perfectly balanced classical form. By the time he composed the sixth of the series, he had achieved his goal. Nevertheless, since this is Haydn, even his “experimental” works are wonderful. The Op. 17 quartets receive little attention today not because there’s anything wrong with them, but because they were eclipsed by Haydn’s later masterpieces in the genre, from Op. 20 on.

This quartet is in four movements: I. Moderato, II. Menuet, III. Adagio, IV. Allegro di molto. The Adagio is especially beautiful, with one of Haydn’s long aria-like melodies over simple pulsed chords and triplet arpeggios.
