Prelude and Fugue, Op. 16, no. 3 by Clara Schumann, arranged for SATB Saxophone Quartet. This work is full of delicate, clear three and four part writing. It is really enjoyable to play as a quartet. The parts are well balanced in difficulty and everyone has something interesting to play, whether it is the melody or a supporting part. This SATB saxophone quartet transcription of the prelude and fugue is in the original key.
An extraordinary pianist and under-appreciated composer, Clara Schumann is more frequently remembered as the wife of Robert Schumann. In the 1840’s together they studied counterpoint and fugal technique. The three preludes and fugues of Opus 16, published in 1845, may be a result of that study but they are much more than mere academic exercises.
