Sonata in B flat, K292, by Mozart, arranged for Saxophone Duet (any two saxophones). This duo sonata is well known in many forms – even as a bassoon solo with piano accompaniment. Many Mozart scholars believe it to have originally been written for two bassoons. As duos for two wind instruments were popular in Mozart’s day this is quite likely. There are also versions for bassoon and cello, clarinet and bassoon, as well as many transcriptions for other instruments. It was composed early in 1775 during Mozart’s visit to Munich.
Mozart is among the most popular of classical composers. He composed over 600 works, many acknowledged as pinnacles of symphonic, concerto , chamber, operatic, and choral music. In addition to the great masterworks he composed many tiny gems like the Sonata in B flat, K292.
The sonata is in three movements:
This arrangement for saxophone duet is most effective when played by 2 like saxophones – especially 2 baritones – but any combination will work as is shown on the VIDEO tab. In the video we play the piece on soprano and alto saxophones. This arrangement has parts for both E-flat and B-flat saxes. Due to time constraints, in the video, we made cuts to all three movements to reduce the performance time to about 5 minutes but this arrangement is of the complete sonata with no cuts.
